The moment

Outdoor wedding. Thirty-four degrees at four in the afternoon. The celebrant clears her throat.

Nobody is fanning themselves with the order of service. Everyone was handed a fan on the way in.

The bride steps out. A hundred fans snap open at once. One sound, one flash of colour, every phone already up.

About us

When did hand fans go out of fashion?

Around the 1930s, it turns out. Electric fans started cooling the room, and hands that once held a fan were holding a cocktail and a cigarette instead. After a few hundred years in fashion, the hand fan went in a drawer.

We kept asking ourselves why, halfway through another Darwin build-up. Australia spends half the year hot, and up north it hardly lets up. The one thing made for it had disappeared, and summer turned into fanning yourself with whatever's handy.

Well, not any more.

We're bringing hand fans back into fashion.
